The Journey of Reishi and Rosewater: Healing, Science, and Personal Responsibility

Updated: May 9

Reishi and Rosewater began as more than a business; it was born out of a personal journey to reclaim health and redefine medicine. Years ago, I faced a life-changing diagnosis of narcolepsy, a disorder that disrupts the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. The doctor prescribed Ritalin, warning that without it, living a “normal” life—holding down a job, starting a family—might be out of reach. Something in me resisted this. I wanted to find another path, a way that felt more aligned with my nature.

That decision became the spark for a lifelong pursuit of holistic health. I began studying cellular nutrition, sleep science, and natural medicine, and eventually found a doctor in New York who used nutritional analysis to uncover imbalances. Through lifestyle changes, I was able to reverse my symptoms within a year and a half. The experience reconnected me to something fundamental: the body’s ability to heal when supported by the right nutrients, rhythms, and herbal allies.

This healing journey led me to California, where I dove into deeper studies of herbalism and mycology, joined a mycological society, and discovered the magic of Reishi mushrooms at a pop-up apothecary. The world of herbal medicine opened up as I learned that crafting herbal medicine is more than just mixing ingredients. It’s about engaging with the plants directly, respecting their life cycles, and truly understanding their unique properties.

Eventually, a family emergency brought me back to Kansas City, where I now have the blessing of acreage and gardens. This environment has allowed me to continue expanding Reishi and Rosewater, sharing my creations with the community. I started hosting pop-ups, selling tinctures, teas, and more at events, festivals, and markets, including inside Madewell, boutiques, and schools. Over time, I’ve popped up at more than 30 events and had the opportunity to teach herbalism at places like Billie’s Grocery and the Crossroads Hotel, each experience affirming my belief in the transformative power of plants.

Today, Reishi and Rosewater offers more than just herbal products; it’s a full-spectrum experience. I’ve hosted one-on-one apothecary sessions, mini-market workshops, and tea services to help people connect personally with herbal medicine. At festivals, I’ve provided unique pop-up tea services and medicinal floristry, weaving flowers and herbs into transformative spaces. I’ve also curated custom orders for large events, organized herbal dinners, and crafted floral arrangements that celebrate the healing power of plants.

Through all of this, my work stands on a simple, profound foundation: the belief that we each hold responsibility for our own health. Building a relationship with plants is the first step, and making herbal medicine is a hands-on journey that begins the moment you walk into the environment you’ll be harvesting from. Every step—harvesting, preparing, and consuming—is a chance to connect with the natural world and honor the body’s wisdom.

Herbal medicine is not only an ancient tradition; it’s also grounded in science. The compounds in plants interact with our biochemistry in measurable, beneficial ways. When I share about the healing effects of reishi or chaga, I’m not just passing on tradition; there’s science affirming how these herbs support immunity, reduce stress, and offer real health benefits.

For me, crafting each tincture is an act of gratitude and connection—a chance to honor the plants, the earth, and the practice of true, hands-on medicine. And the science? It’s there, affirming what healers and herbalists have known for centuries: the natural world offers us everything we need, if only we’re willing to connect with it and take responsibility for our own well-being.

If this story resonates with you, consider it a call to begin or deepen your own relationship with herbal medicine. Reishi and Rosewater isn’t just about products; it’s about sharing the tools and knowledge for each of us to take health into our own hands. Whether you’re curious about a specific herb, ready to try a custom tea blend, or interested in a one-on-one session to dive deeper, I’m here to guide you.

Let’s reconnect with nature’s wisdom and craft our way to true wellness, one herb at a time. Visit us at the next market or reach out directly—I’d love to help you get started. 🌱
